WE hear and read of so many complaints about the inefficiency of our postal services that it is good to be able to plant a bouquet among the brickbats.
Every week, for 51 weeks of the year, Fenprobe, the Talking News Service for the blind and partially-sighted in East Cambridgeshire, records local news onto tapes in its Ely studio and sends them to more than 100 listeners in the region.
The weekly programme has been repeated for more than 25 years. Local papers appear on the news stands on Thursday mornings. They are edited by one of six Fenprobe teams of readers in the morning, recorded in the Ely studio onto C60 cassettes in the afternoon and delivered to the Post Office in the evening.
On Friday morning they are delivered to the listeners, by first class mail - free of charge by a Royal Mail concession - and often before the newspapers are delivered.
