COMMENTING on the letter from Eileen Barton criticising the American presence at Mildenhall.
I am ex-RAF and was based at Mildenhall.
I was there in 1950 when the US Army Air Force, as it was then, first moved in.
Their way of life is far different to ours, but a more generous people I have yet to meet.
I don't agree with all their policies, they don't get it right every time. Why should they pay tax on fuel, for that matter why should we?
They provide much-needed employment in the area and contribute much more to the country's economy than they take out.
I respect her views to criticise, that's democratic, but for all types that do so I suggest they say a little prayer at night - 'thank God they are on our side'.
