Frothy taffeta, pretty laces and shiny satins were the order of the day at a special exhibition held at the weekend.

Fifty wedding dresses attracted the crowds to Soham’s Methodist Church for the special one-off fundraising event.

The vintage wedding exhibition saw all the dresses donated by their proud owners for a weekend on display in the church.

Organiser Lesley Watchorn who brought the idea to life after hearing about it from a friend said the dresses dated back to the 1800s.

Every dress was displayed with a specially made posie and a photo of the original wearer on their big day.

Mrs Watchorn said the owners were asked to loan their photo albums too and these were also displayed for people to look through.

A programme gave details of each of the dresses, which were lovingly displayed on mannequins and over chairs.

“It was a lot of hard work but it was worth it. It was a real community event. We had around 150 people visit the exhibition on the Saturday and about 70 on Sunday, which was fantastic.

“We served food but kept that and the drinks in the hall to ensure there were no accidents with the dresses. We had an Austin 60 on display between the church and hall drawing the two together,” said Mrs Watchorn.

Around £1,000 was raised for church funds and Mrs Watchorn said the aim was to now hold another one-off big event each year.

“It won’t necessarily be at the same time of the year, but it will be something different, which we hope people will enjoy as much as the wedding exhibition,” she added.
