ON the question of how long it has taken to dig Roswell Pits: note that PH Reaney in The Place Names of Cambridgeshire and the Isle of Ely (Cambridge 1943) cites evidence that there were stone and clay pits at 'Roueshil' in the 13th Century and gravel pits at 'Roushyll' in the 14th Century.
