WHAT is happening at our council offices? I suspect our local councillors have all gone mad.

Whether you like the idea of extending Broad Street car park into the green area or not, surely an idea can be put forward and accepted or rejected without this circus erupting.

It seems to me that our councillors are now totally caught up in two political parties who, on principle, will not ever agree and try to score points off each other when possible. Letters of the type written by Nigel Bell and now Cllr Allen and counter-written by friends of the Conservatives smacks strongly of Prime Minister's Question Time.

Personally, I think one party is milking this likely, unpopular proposal for all it's worth. It seems that most people have no idea which actual piece of land is in question; even the newspapers have outlined different areas in photographs, and it seems as though those opposed have been happy to let this misguidance continue. People should be given the facts correctly and a decision based on public opinion thereafter.

A sceptic might say that both parties involved will be quite ready to say that, had parking charges not been strongly opposed to, this green piece of land would not be in jeopardy, giving power to their argument for saddling us all with parking taxes, which was subtly suggested in a letter last week.

I am sure the Ely traders opposed to parking charges did not mean "go and build car parks on grassland" when they asked the council to solve the problem in other ways.

I am sure there must be some unused concrete out there somewhere, and I wonder what happened to the commuter car park which they have all supposedly agreed to build?

It is my opinion, come elections next April, that anyone who is Liberal, Conservative, Labour or loony party should be avoided and let's go for people with names and a heart for Ely and area.
