SORRY to have been away so long, but sometimes twittering on about the every-day minutia of life in the face of great sadness can seem disrespectful. I am, of course, talking about the news that Liam Fairhurst lost his battle to live and sadly died on June 30. Liam was an amazing character and I will never forget the warmth he radiated and that cheeky smile. Liam's mum Sarah described him as a beacon of hope, courage and inspiration and that best sums him up. The rest of us mere mortals have a lot to live up to, but the best tribute we can pay this amazing little boy and his loving and dedicated family is to continue the fund-raising work he started. The Ely Standard will continue to raise money for CLIC Sargent through Liam's Fund and we are also happy to take cheques made out to CLIC Sargent. I have to say a huge 'thank you' to all the people who have already been so generous with donations and all those who have taken the time to send letters and cards for the Fairhurst family, which we will pass on to Mark, Sarah and Callum.

If you want to join me in remembering Liam and also raising some money for Cancer Research UK, I am trying to get a group of people together for a 10k race in Cambridge on October 18.

It's open to males and females and entrants can walk or run. If you would like to take part, go to, wwwrun10k.org and follow the instructions for the Cambridge race. Get signed up and then drop me an email. We will feature all the Run For Liam runners in the paper nearer the time to help with sponsorship. If you would like the photo of Liam for your T-shirt let me know and I will email it back to you.
