EVEN though the sun has continued to blaze down manfully (between the showers), the nights have been drawing in and the conkers have been tumbling down all around us. Yes, it must be autumn.

The sure-fire way of confirming the start of the third season of the year is Soham's long-established Pumpkin Fair, and the 2006 event is on Saturday, September 30 on the Recreation ground, from 1.30pm until 5pm. For the first time, this year's event incorporates the national championships, so there should be some really monstrous examples on show. If big orange vegetables are not your thing, then, come and admire the huge sunflowers or the children's produce sculptures. There are poetry competitions and contests for flowers, too. If none of that tempts you (what's wrong with you?) you can browse the stalls instead.

In the evening, there is a concert in Beechurst Hall given by the Wicken and Cottenham brass bands in aid of the children's hospices at Milton. Tickets are £5 and are available from Brenda's Flowers or on 01353 723804, or on the door.
