I RECENTLY received a card from the Royal Mail informing me that they were unable to deliver a package addressed to me, as excess postage was owing. I had to collect it from the sorting office, but not before I had paid 30p postage, plus a handling charge of £1.
When I queried the handling charge in relation to the postage I was told that this "reflected the number of departments through which it had to pass". Several other people were queuing up to conduct similar transactions: one man was charged £1 handling charge for a 5p excess.
If it really costs £1 to recover 5p or 30p, would it not be better to suffer the loss and keep the public's goodwill?
Perhaps an over-zealous local official needs counselling or is this another example of rip-off Britain?
