IT is utterly ludicrous and short-sighted that the council are considering using a piece of church land for a car park, which would only be big enough for around 50 or so cars.

Not only would it be a sacrilege, but a complete waste, as more than 8,000 new homes are to be built around Ely by 2021, so thousands of new parking spaces will be needed, which of course is impossible.

Everyone knows that when it comes to the car, we get the domino effect. Roads are widened, they fill up, new roads are built, they fill up and so on ad infinitum, so a treasured piece of green being concreted over for the sake of a few cars would not make any difference in the long term.

Councillors need to think ahead, not just about the present situation otherwise that piece of land will have gone for nothing.

Good public transport in and around Ely will become an absolute necessity as that is the only option looking ahead to the future.
