THE decline in honeybee numbers in Britain doesn’t just mean less honey.

It’s estimated that bees contribute 200 million each year to the UK economy by pollinating a huge percentage of our fruit and vegetable crops.

In recent years British beekeepers have lost up to a fifth of their bee colonies over the winter – and, according to their public affairs director, Tim Lovett: “Ongoing losses in the pollination army of honeybees cannot continue if we are to secure food supplies.”

Today the Ely Standard urges you to do your bit to help the humble honeybee fight back and ensure the continued supply of our food crops.

Anglia Co-operative has created a bee-friendly garden at its headquarters which is home to working bee hives.

Schoolchildren can watch the bees at work in the hives from the safety of a purpose-built observatory – and also learn about the importance of the honeybee to our economy and environment and what they can do to help.

Anglia Co-operative also actively fundraises for the Peterborough and District Beekeepers Association to help further their beekeeping and educational work.
