WITH reference to Eddie Holden's comments regarding Roswell Pits, I find it hard to believe that anyone could not be pleased at the protection the Pits have been granted, To respond to Mr Malster's comments with the retort "I am older than you" seems bizarre. Surely the argument about protection of the Pits has nothing whatsoever to do with how long a person has lived in Ely, but everything to do with protecting vital wild spaces. Mr Holden writes that Mr Tyrell is planning to "just trying to make the place safe for people to walk around". In my view, it is 'pie in the sky' not to believe that Mr Tyrell, as a businessman, is merely looking for a return on his investment. Yes the pits were once an industrial site, but now they are not. Yes, there were once no trees, but now there is a thriving ecosystem, which has only come about due to the lack of human interference. Mr Holden writes that until Mr Tyrell "bought the pits with his own money no-one cared". The truth is people cared a great deal, and continue to do so now that the future of this vital wild space is under threat.
