I LIKE so many other people of the Ely area would dearly love to see another super store, say Morrisons or Sainsbury open in Ely in competition to Tesco. To a certain degree we are dependant on going to Tesco as we cannot get parked in Ely centre and are dependent on taking our car into Ely in order to get our shopping home. With lack of car parking space in Ely that is what will kill off city centre shopping, not the opening of another super store outside the centre. Tesco has had a good run since moving to Angel Drove but they must expect the city to expand and compete with other stores. The council say that all development will stop when our population reaches 25.000. Surely we must be past that number as you printed earlier this year on that question that in 2001 the population was 15,800. I read somewhere that since the year 2000 the number of new houses built in Ely to date was 3,680. Times that by three for occupancy of each house, on average, I think that works out at 25,000 plus, and they are still building.
