I SEEM to have upset some of your readers with a letter I submitted two weeks ago. I feel I need to respond and set some facts straight.

I mentioned the 'pits' when I should have said the 'pit' that is being developed. I stated that I haven't seen or heard a bittern on this pit, but so many of your readers have stated that they have seen the birds there. Duncan Poyser says in the past they have boomed and have been found around the area of the pit. Mr Baker says he has lived in Ely for 11 years and with all the bitterns about he then goes on to say that he has only seen one!

I must have been out that day and missed it, but that's life. Mr Hughes states that he has only seen one, again, I must have gone out again. He talks about his knowledge of wildlife, and he is very clever and I have met him and like him.

I should have stated sightings of Harriers along the river but I have never seen any in the pit, although they might fly over to get to their hunting grounds.

The photograph in the paper is good, but could have been taken anywhere. He states in the first paragraph of his article 'in and around the pit' which covers half of Ely, not in the pit.

Mr Howard went down to the pit as a boy and would have been about 12 at the time the pit was started and says that in 1950 a small pit was dug so they were not there in 1885. We have one local resident who can walk on water. I was told by the same person that when he was a boy there was a track near the Severn Sisters corner from Prickwillow Road across what we call the Common down the hill and across the Grass Meadow to the railway gates. The comment about the pit being there in1885 is incorrrect. It must have been elsewhere.
