IT was a bit disappointing on Saturday for quite a few people. For most of us it was England getting edged out of the World Cup because they can't and never have been able to take penalties. For others, mainly those from north of the border, it was that England didn't get totally thrashed.

It has long been a tradition that to show your Englishness you fly a flag made in China with the emblem of a chap from Turkey and drink lots of foreign lager. Nothing wrong with that except that the foreign lager makes the brain a bit muddled. It did strike me as a bit odd that one business in town almost invited trouble last week and seem to be accusing many of us of being racist. You'll find one or two idiots wherever you look, but the majority are relatively sane and tolerant.

As it happened, the High Street and Red Lion Square were both intact on Sunday morning and the disappointment of Saturday obviously didn't turn into a flying brick festival.

Here's to an England win at Euro 2008.
