I WOULD like to express the Soham Community Hall Trust's disappointment at the content of the letter I have received from John Hill, the chief executive of East Cambs District Council about the way a decision was made at the full council meeting on February 21.

I asked whether the council still supported the retention and development of St Andrew's Church Hall and adjoining land for community use, as they did in December 2006. I expected an answer given by all the councillors, not just the seven Conservative members.

I think the matter has been handled badly and unfairly not only as far as the trustees of Soham Community Hall are concerned by also the 32 councillors who had no opportunity to give their opinions. Had all the councillors been able to give their opinion, we would have accepted the decision in good grace.

Without the continued support of East Cambridgeshire District Council we have very little chance of success with our ambition to save Soham from becoming a dormitory town.

JOHN PALMER

Chairman, Soham Community Hall Trust
