THE Ely Standard published an email which seemed to be an interesting, if extreme, personal view on children eating meat (Jan 25). It was, in fact, propaganda originating from the anti-farming group PETA. It was tailored to hook into a local story, as advocated in their letter-writing guidelines.
This week, the NFU has complained to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) about PETA's poster 'feeding kids meat is child abuse'.
Complaints came from farmers, but also from child welfare campaigners who do not like to see their serious concerns trivialised.
PETAS has no qualification for commenting on a suitable diet for children. The letter writer - whether writing personally or without disclosing her affiliation - fails to consider the role of meat in preventing anaemia, or of satisfying the appetite so that gorging on wheat, sugar and fat does not happen.
