Virgin Holidays staff at the Ely store have placed bets on the upcoming Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight in Las Vegas…. off the predictions of a cat!
Local celebrity cat ‘Garfield’, who boasts 5,000 Facebook followers, has a reputation of a fighter; leading staff to seek his advice before placing a bet on the match
Garfield (aka Mr Sainsbury’s) has been asked to predict the outcome of the highly anticipated Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight in Las Vegas – and four lucky holidaymakers will be the cats that get the cream if he’s right.
A year ago Garfield -was famously knocked out of the Virgin Holidays store after foul play with a customer. The ginger moggie has since been let back in for good behaviour, and his reputation as a scrapper led store staff to seek his advice before placing a bet on the match.
Mayweather vs. McGregor is touted as the most expensive sporting event in history and is the first time a world champion boxer and a world champion cage-fighter have gone head-to-head in the ring. Virgin Holidays have seen a surge of interest in Las Vegas breaks as hundreds of Brits head to the T-Mobile arena on the Las Vegas strip to watch it live, and thousands more get ready to watch from home.

Virgin Holidays staff gave Garfield signs of cage-fighter McGregor and boxer Mayweather and watched as he scratched Mayweather four times. They’ve now placed a £50 bet on McGregor winning in the fourth round, and are so confident of Garfield’s prediction; they’ve agreed to surprise four of their customers with free holidays to Las Vegas if his prophecy is right.
Laura Beresford, Virgin Holiday’s Ely store manager, said: “We’ve had a lot of customers coming into the store asking about Las Vegas holidays in the build up to the McGregor clash so we thought it would be fun to put on a bet - unfortunately we don’t know much about boxing.

“Garfield has always been a scrapper so we’re hoping he can do a ‘Paul the Octopus’ and predict the outcome of the match. He’s always quick off the mark to cuddle up to customers that book big holidays so we’re confident he’s got our back – and might even turn out to Ely’s very own mystic mog!”
Garfield has been visiting the Virgin Holidays store for the last three years; his favourite spot is on the Virgin Holiday’s red couch where he observes hundreds of customers booking their holidays to Las Vegas, Florida, and beyond each week.
