ART in public places is often the focus for public discussion. We all view art differently and the potential to engage in this debate is important.

Sluice was commissioned after consultation with many groups and individuals in Ely, all of whom were encouraged to discuss and debate every aspect of the artwork.

The Sluice commission follows on from highly successful community events last year in Ely, including the Land and Water family workshops in June 2006 at Ely Museum, in which children and parents were encouraged to discuss the Sluice sculpture and its possible siting, and to examine the links between the project and the water management systems of the area. During the Particles exhibition in The Babylon Gallery, four schools brought in classes to make items for the launch of Sluice.

More than 300 adults and children have already had a taste of the significance of the sculpture in the Ely environment, and its artistic impact. We hope that many more people will take the opportunity to look at the plans, discuss the artwork, talk to their friends and families - and raise awareness of public art.
