IF the old saying is true, and a lot of them tend to be, March should go out like a lamb.

It certainly came in like a lion, what with the wind and the rain. It seemed to prove that modern children have somehow become susceptible to water. One spot of rain and the number of vehicles carrying eager students to St Andrew's and Soham Village College stretches almost as far as the eye can see in both directions. Let's hope there aren't any bright sparks from the councils about - they'll slap a congestion charge on the road as soon as look at you.

Not all children have evolved a weakness to water. There is a convoy of youngsters wending its way along Paddock Street in the morning in the form of a "walking bus". No congestion, no pollution and a chance for a good old chat before school. It's probably quicker, too.

Of course, the county council worked this out some time ago when they withdrew the bus from Fordham to the village college.
