I WAS disappointed to see that Roswell Pits has been made into a political issue by Liberal Democrat councillors when clearly those of every political persuasion are equally concerned.
After reading the emotive words of your Liberal Democrat spokesman on the front page last week, I was surprised to find, on checking out Jim Paice's column, that he was backing no one in this dispute, but merely offering to act as honest broker between the various interests. A brave man indeed!
He laid out the rights of the owner, Mr Tyrell, against the hopes of a large proportion of the local population and the role that the council can play within legal restraints.
Trying to force the council to act unlawfully and prejudicially as recommended by the Liberal Democrats will achieve nothing but total victory for Mr Tyrrell in the High Court. Taxpayers will foot the bill and probably lose access to a beautiful part of Ely forever.
A compromise is the only hope in my opinion. Certainly, if I were a bittern I'd vote Conservative on grounds of health and safety and hope the conservationists might start looking at me as a viable profit centre rather than a tax burden.
