I’m grumpy, because we’ve all been duped

I DID not intend to imply collusion between the Ely Standard and the Liberal Democrats in my letter last week, and I apologise if I gave that impression.

The fact that the Lib Dem councillors have no shame in feeding you 'sexy' and misleading information is not your fault - you have every right to expect accuracy from public servants.

A proposal to desecrate the cathedral meadows certainly qualifies for your loudest headlines and most spectacular photo opportunities.

What's made me so grumpy is that we have all been duped.

Furthermore, your photograph of Anna Hitchin, the children, the cathedral and the meadow, has not helped much either, because it omits to show the very thing that your report was about - the site of the proposed extension to Broad Street car park.

However, lots of people think that it does, as indicated by the survey carried out on recent market days.

Even Dr Hitchin, chairman of The Ely Conservation Group, who lives right on top of the site, is similarly confused. Hardly surprising, therefore, that your photographer should also get it wrong.

Even with wide angle lens wizardry, it would be impossible to include a picture of the cathedral, together with this plot, because of the density of trees, which, by the way, are in no way threatened.

However, your photograph of Anna Hitchin was very attractive, whereas the ridiculous one you had last week of the Lib Dems and their highly questionable 'save the meadows' political placards was not a pretty sight.

So if there is a choice, please can we have Mrs Hitchin and the children back? At least they will pull in the tourists rather than frighten them away!
