BITTERNS in Ely: Mr Holden questioned a couple of weeks ago if Bitterns actually existed in the area of Roswell Pits. Well, I have never seen a Mr Holden so I don't know if he really exists. However, many people have seen Bitterns in the Roswell Pits area, and local wildlife artist Ben Green has photographed them. The proof can be seen on the gallery pages of ElyGreen.org a website that provides information on what to look for and where to find all the environment has to offer around Ely. It is published by me and some like-minded friends. The Bittern was booming regularly in April and May, and readers who live on the Eastern edge of Ely may well have heard it. I come from the Norfolk Broads, where Bitterns are well known, and so was a bit of a disbeliever about their presence in Ely myself. However I first heard one in Ely last year, so had to eat humble pie!
