I SEE Annie Shackleton refers to "our councillors" in her letter published in the Ely Standard on March 4 but note she gives her address as Town Street, Upwell. How long has Upwell been in East Cambs? Our councillors are elected to represent the interests of residents in East Cambs, not traders from outside the district. The council has financial difficulties, in common with central Government, many businesses and individuals, and needs to make savings. Any increase, if at all, to the council tax needs to be kept to an absolute minimum in these difficult times. I certainly do not want my council tax being used to subsidise market traders. If that means losing a few stalls on the Saturday junk market, or the Thursday market, then so be it. If their business needs my Council Tax subsidy to make it viable, then it clearly has problems which are not caused by the policy of the ECDC. Perhaps the council should turn the market place back into parking. At least that could be a way of raising revenue rather than being a drain on resources.
