FLOODS will come to East Cambridgeshire and will our councillors have done their home work? I very much doubt it! Most of them will never have seen the Fens in full flood. In 1947 when I was a young man travelling from Norwich to Ely the water was lapping the rail-track at Shippey Hill and trains were travelling at snail crawl. It was a sea of water. People are now saying that we have the new cut river to Mildenhall as a relief for flood water, well have you seen it lately? It is full to over flowing now so if flood water comes it will be no good. It only needs a very high tide and very strong wind, plus heavy storms of rain, and you are in trouble. Plans should be put in place now for people to be rescued and look after. Contractors with heavy equipment will need to be available to use to transport people and all these plans should be on paper, along with maps, ready to be put into action if the area floods. We have two great elements in this world, they are fire and water, both very good servants but very bad masters, and flooding proves how they can be the master. If the banks of the river break at Pymoor, think of the people there and to get them out you will need boats and lots of them. Someone needs to think about where to get inflatable boats at a minute's notice. Councillors need to look at the old photos and films of these floods and learn from them. There are still one or two people in Ely who worked on the flood banks with POW's to stem the flows and these people would have a lot of knowledge.
