ANOTHER GOOD DAY

YET another excellent pumpkin fair, good weather, good entertainment but, above all, good company. Plenty of livestock in the form of ferrets, tortoises and a lady with a rat on her shoulder (it did disappear down her shirt once, but I’d rather not think about that). The celebration of British food was enhanced by the excellent Indian pakoras on the St Andrew’s School stall. A very good day and congratulations to all involved in organising it.

A MORNING OUT

JAKE the spaniel enjoys visiting new places whenever he gets the chance. The fact that he is inclined to charge about like a headless chicken does sometimes mean that he’s not often invited twice but he always makes the most of the one trip he does get. He is quite hopeful that he may get his one and only look at Chippenham Park tomorrow when the grounds will be opened up from 10am till midday as part of Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. He’s heard that dogs are welcome and hopes that whoever takes him will be quite happy to pay the �5 entrance fee asked for humans. Jake thinks that there are two good reasons to support the event: one, Macmillan is an excellent organisation that has helped so many people and, two, the Chippenham Estate always supports Soham by donating the town’s Christmas tree each year, so the least we can do is support them. Jake realises that not everyone can get to Chippenham but might still want to support the charity, so he thinks that they might like to go along to Soham Bowls Club where Pat and Susan are organising another event for the coffee morning with stalls, draws and everything you would expect. This event, sadly, does not include dogs, but will run from 10am till 12.30pm.

GRAB YOUR DIBBER

AUTUMN is upon us and that means plenty of work in the garden. If you have a morning to spare on Saturday the volunteers who look after the flower beds around town would be very happy to see you. Rosemary and her happy band will be planting next year’s flowers from 9.30am starting at the beds opposite Webb’s Stores on Fordham Road. If you can spare an hour or two just turn up with whatever tool you think is appropriate and get stuck in.

THERE is so much going on in the coming week that I can only give sketchy details unless the editor can spare a whole page (only joking ma’am!).Tonight (Thursday) there is a comedy drama at The Brook called Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know, tickets are �12 and �10 from 01353 624932 or 01353 712748. Also tonight is the inaugural meeting of the Friends of Soham Village College in Beechurst, from 6.30pm. It’s nice when someone who has ignored you for ages wants to be friends again, isn’t it? Tomorrow evening (Friday) Ely Inner Wheel is organising a variety show featuring a last night of the proms at The Brook for MAGPAS. Tickets �9 from 01353 664533 or Burrows Bookshop in Ely. On Saturday afternoon there is an antique fair and valuation, plus a car boot, at St Andrew’s School. In the evening the Galaxy Big Band will be performing, again at The Brook, from 7.30pm in an event organised by the Fordham Charity Group. On Sunday the Salvation Army are having their harvest festival service in Bushel Lane at 2.30pm and on Monday at 6pm they are holding their harvest supper followed by a sale of produce. Finally on Wednesday The Forum is hosting a meet the councillors evening at the pavilion at 7.30pm when you can meet representatives from the town, district and county councils and find out finally who is actually responsible for what.
