I WAS interested to read Mr Holden's letter and comments that so-called Ely Common has never been a common. I understand that the said area has been in private ownership for some 300 years, been called Ely Common and used by the people of Ely throughout those years. If Mr Holden would like to visit Ely Library he will be able to see beautiful maps showing the area named Ely Common produced 300 years ago together with many and various maps indicating the same throughout the years, and indeed current maps produced by ECDC still showing Ely Common. It would seem tragic that the history and traditions that have built up with the usage of the common over such a long period should be wiped out by a very modern piece of law that appears to make no sense at all.
