On the face of it there's no problem with their latest whinge; the demand for everything all-year-round not only causes extra air journeys but also destroys the enjoyment of the seasons with the new crops coming on throughout the year. Where it does fall down is with the vast urban populations. Unless the parks in London and Cambridge are going to be ploughed up to plant wheat the locals will have to do without bread, and exactly where the herds of bullocks are going to graze I have no idea.

I must admit that I thought the asparagus for sale in Soham the other day was a little over the top. I really can't see why we need to import it from Peru!

Presumably the answer is to have an allotment and grow your own stuff. There used to be a block of allotments between Fordham Road and Brook Street. They are still there, but have been left fallow for a few years. The occupants were thrown off so that they could be sold off for industrial units. Nobody else seems to think much of the idea, though, as they are still unsold. Just think, we could have been growing our own asparagus all these years.
