LAST week we had some people from East Cambs District Council at The Pavilion to tell us about Soham's conservation area and plans to make it bigger. At the moment it runs from Julius Martin Lane to Stone Bridge. The proposal is to go as far as The Hoops on Townsend and down to the cemetery and also to include the recreaction ground and the mill. Another alternative takes in Angle Common too. With Soham struggling to survive and prosper, I did wonder how putting lots more planning restrictions on the businesses of the town was going to help. So now we know. East Cambs obviously does things for the sake of it rather than for the good of the people who live here. They are well in touch with things in Soham, though. In the booklet that explains the proposals it refers to Soham as a "village" no less than 61 times. I bet they never call Ely a town!

INFO: IF you would like to know more about the proposals, you can call Rosie Burton on 01353 616226 or visit the website at: www.eastcambs.gov.uk If you have any opinions on the scheme they need to be with the conservation officer in writing by 5pm on December 12.
