IT was interesting to see how many residents attended the Lidl public meeting. There seemed to be considerable support for a second planning application to build on the EMG site, opposite to Tesco.
Several residents mistakenly thought councillors had refused the original application. In fact, it did not come to the planning committee for decision. However, district councillors will be able to recommend that the second planning application is put before the committee.
It appears that the original application was refused because of traffic congestion in the area - a weak argument in view of the siting of the new car park. Another reason for refusal was competition with Ely centre shops by edge-of-town retail development.
I am not convinced that it is ethical to confuse social engineering with planning issues. Where would it all end?
I doubt Lidl will be in competition with town centre shops unless they intend to sell greetings cards or houses!
