THERE has been some confusion as to what Mr Payton's position was at Ely Railway Station and I feel I must put this into the right perspective with respect to Tony and Timothy Grout (Letters, December 3).
Tony Payton was employed at Ely as a booking ticket issuing officer, a position he held for 50 years and carried out as conscientiously as anybody could. At no time in his career was he a station master, a position which has been abolished for more than 40 years.
I, amongst about 30 other railwaymen and women attended his retirement party and wish him many years of happy retirement ahead.
