THESE days, on top of the Council Tax you seem to have to pay for almost everything that you thought was covered by it. Getting rid of bigger bits of rubbish is a case in point. There appears to be a fee for collection, and it applies to each item, not for the journey. Consequently, a neighbour of mine came up with a bright idea the other day. He had a load of pots he didn't want, and rather than pay through the nose to get rid of them or drag all the way to Grunty Fen he put them beside the road with a 'free, help yourself' sign. In about an hour they had all gone. He was happy, the new owners were happy and there had been no extra pollution caused by vehicles driving across the county.
