IT has come to my notice that some Ely by-laws are being well enforced, but clear that in other areas they are being flouted. People who display notices advertising events and the sale of perishable goods. While it has always been acceptable to put up a notice in the countryside for say 'pick your own' this should not been happening in the middle of Ely Market Square. The reason that notices are not allowed is that they distract drivers and some people have been made to take them down, but others have been allowed to stay. All the roundabouts have eye-catching notices on them, advertising lots of different things, so why are some people allowed to pay to have these adverts and others made to take them down. Surely this type of advertising will distract drivers? The boards advertising Aquafest were not taken down and Ely Cathedral regularly advertises events along the A10. If the district council is serious about enforcing this law then it needs to start at Downham Road sports area where there is a multitude of notice boards there that need clearing up. I feel very strongly about this and hope that people will still be able to sell plants from their gardens and put up small notices to advertise this. I hope all the boards in the future will be allowed, but there must be one bylaw for everyone in the East Cambridgeshire area.
