I WRITE as a friend and former resident of Little Downham, and am bitterly disappointed that the post office there is under threat. As a district councillor in Ely, I was flabbergasted that the post office in St John's Road also faces closure.

I cannot believe there is no profit to be made from both these post offices. If they are axed, it will place an enormous strain on the makeshift post office in Ely High Street, which is already under such pressure that many customers go elsewhere rather than join a queue, which often extends on to the pavement. Parking there is always difficult and, as it lies within the pedestrian area on Saturdays, this is particularly unhelpful to residents of Little Downham. If the Post Office is losing money, these measures are a sure way to increase the deficit.

Ely's population is around 17,000, with that number increasing fast. Is one cramped site the best they can offer?
