THE Government has just doubled airport taxes, despite the recent public outcry and is now suggesting road pricing, both of which are being justified on 'green" grounds.

If this Government wishes to have a genuine green effect it should be increasing its financial assistance to extend rural bus services, rather than further penalizing those in rural areas, who have no alternative but to continue using their cars.

Most of the villages in East Cambridgeshire have a poor or non-existent bus service. This severely disadvantages the elderly and the young who can be imprisoned in their villages and everyone living in small communities has to pay more, as they are obliged to use their cars, if they have them. Here in East Cambridgeshire the district council is supporting Dial-a-Ride to help them. However, central Government should be using these so-called green taxes to support public transport in rural areas.
