I WAS fascinated to read the story of the great flood of March 1947.
I was 16 years old at the time. I lived with my parents at Sykes sweet shop sandwiched between the High School for girls and the Peacock Inn.
I well remember all the activity going on, and in particular, the amphibious army of 'ducks' parked outside in St Mary's Street.
Mrs Cummins was a regular customer at our shop. The Sewell family lived at the Peacock Pub at the time.
So long ago, but the memories linger on, as they will for a good many who suffered at that time as a result of the damage and loss caused by the floods.
