THE proposal to erect the Broad Street car park into part of the meadow is appalling. What I find difficult to understand is that at the committee stage the proposal can be allowed to survive by a single Conservative vote. Then again at a full council meeting the Conservatives also voted to allow consideration of the proposal to continue. It could otherwise have been killed off then and there.

Is this the same Conservative party whose leader David Cameron recently announced that his party would be committed to conservation and the environment?
