I WOULD like to reply to your article entitled 'NHS scheme to slash spending'. Cambridgeshire NHS is planning to reduce hospital admissions to save money. A 38 million deficit for the financial year has emerged and the national agenda to reduce the burden on large hospitals has prompted the county to look at alternative ways to improve outpatient services to the community through the Princess of Wales Hospital in Ely. I understand from the NHS's own leaflet that the sum of money being spent on GP hospitals, dentist, etc is 750,000. If the NHS were to stop advertising Stop Smoking campaigns and Alcohol awareness campaigns for people who don't want to quit, surely this money could be spent on people such as the elderly and the infirmed and help heavily-laden NHS economy.
