I need to dispel the fears of Angela Cookson and B Wilbraham (Standard July 13), following our decision to close the public toilet at Sacrist Gate. This decision was reached after a thorough review of public toilet provision in the city which showed that Ely, with six toilets, had significantly more loos than other comparable towns such as Bury St Edmunds and Wells in Somerset.

Usage of the Sacrist Gate toilet has declined by one third over the last two years, and this facility has the lowest customer service rating in Ely. It would require investment soon on fixtures and fittings and the five remaining toilets are within a reasonable walking distance and can cope with additional usage.

The money saved will be used to extend the opening of the Ely toilets in the summer months to 7.30pm, from next year.

I want to assure readers of the council's real commitment to providing clean and good quality toilet facilities. We have eight 'loo of the year' award-winning facilities and will remain one of the leading councils in the provision of high quality and clean toilet facilities.
