Like most law-abiding individuals, I pay my road tax every year and wonder just where it all goes. Paying for a guided bus from Huntingdon to Cambridge, presumably, so that all the lorries that cause the congestion on the A14 can put their containers in the overhead lockers and free up the carriageways.
Once you've paid over your (enormous) cheque to Mr Trinder you tend to be a bit miffed if you see a vehicle merrily trundling about without a disc in its window. So it was with a little bit of smug satisfaction that I saw a chap with a van checking discs in the High Street last week and actually clamping a vehicle that was sitting there without one. The driver really had no excuse; he had parked directly opposite the Post Office where they sell such things.
