A FASCINATING brochure from the district council called ecdc fell on the mat the other day. There are loads of items about how they are keeping the government happy, but not much about how happy we are. It did mention that there was a roadshow on the High Street on Friday to explain about future development in the district. Two ladies were sitting in the rain giving out reams of paper.

It seems that East Cambs has got to have built 8,600 dwellings by 2021 and Soham along with Littleport and Ely is one of the main targets. To someone sitting at a computer looking at maps, this makes some sort of sense; each is a reasonably sized settlement on a railway line. The main problem is that of the three, Soham has no access to the railway line. We do have buses, of course, but as they originate from Cambridge they can be 20 minutes late before they reach Quy, so they are at best sporadic when they pass through Soham.

The plan showing areas of future development still refuses to link Downfields with the rest of Soham, plenty of room for expansion at the other end, though.

There shouldn't be any problem about water supply for the new residents. Every time we get a bit of rain our two temporary reservoirs fill up nicely. One is at the junction of Sand Street and the Butts and the other takes up most of the recreation ground car park. No need to go thirsty in Soham! If beheading SNOBS members is a bit harsh, perhaps a ducking stool in the car park would work.
