THE continual pursuit of an Ely Southern Bypass, when the town already has a bypass in Angel Drove, shows how insular and out-of-touch our district and town councillors are. The suggestion that the reported £27 million of tax payer's money, even if this were to be the final cost, should be spent on more tarmac for a town of 19,000 people seems extraordinarily selfish.
We already have a serious and growing traffic issue in our region, which can only be exacerbated if a new and easier route around the south of Ely were opened. It would merely attract even more vehicles especially HGV's, some of whom are actively discouraged by the current slow passage. Worse, it can only lead to further increase to the traffic flows throughout the rest of East Cambs, where incidentally there are four times as many people as those who actually live in Ely, making it a solution for a few but a life more miserable for the majority.
This is blinkered and woolly thinking at its best.
