DONNA Martin and the good folk of the Soham Community History Museum have done a splendid job getting a memorial erected for the heroes of the rail explosion.

Yes, there are medals in the village college and a plaque in the church, but this is a bold symbol of remembrance, pride and, above all, gratitude to the blokes who saved the town sitting right in the middle of the community.

The open-air ceremony with the Duke of Gloucester was spot-on, too. The pipe band from Bury St Edmunds caused the appropriate stirring start to the Parade and the street party on the rec was excellent too. Of course, it would have been nice to see Soham Comrades Band lead the procession, but they did provide a bugler.
