I WAS looking at the excellent Soham Roots website the other day (www.sohamroots.co.uk) when the name of a 19th century townswoman leapt out at me.

It just shows how cruel some parents can be, or that some ladies should be careful who they marry.

This particular lady had the lovely Christian name of Lydia, no problem there at all, but combine it with the surname of Jugg and it makes her sound like a cover for a container with a spout.

It could have been worse, she could have married a composer and decided to hyphenate both names.

Then she would have been Mrs Jugg-Handel.
