WITH reference to the letter from Cecilia Tredget (Letters, Juy 20) about the toilets in Sacrist Gate may I point out that they are the only set of toilets in the city centre.
If they really do want to close a toilet, may I suggest the one on Palace Green.
Yes, the toilets may well be within walking distance for a fit person, but what about the disabled?
We know as far as parking is concerned that the disabled who need the parking in the High Street are ignored, with people using them just to pop in the bank, just going to get a stamp etc.
I've yet to see anybody have the maximum fine for the misuse of disabled bays imposed upon them; by the way it is a maximum fine of £1000.
Take it from me, it is no fun when you're disabled and have walking difficulties to walk to any of the other toilets - hang on - within easy walking distance?
The other toilets are the Paradise Centre car park, The Maltings, where the coaches park beyond Silver Street, and the ones on Palace Green and The Cloisters.
So...look at the Cloisters, for these will be the only other toilets in central Ely which will be convenient for the High Street, all the others are too far away for the disabled and young mothers with children.
Come on Cecilia, come out of your ivory tower and into the real world. How about I give you a pair of crutches or walking sticks and make you walk, not to the Cloisters, but to any other toilet, then you may appreciate the problems that the disabled and young families will suffer with the closure of Sacrist Gate.
Maybe more people would use it if they knew it was there.
