Editor's Note:

THIS photograph of the Roswell Pits was taken circa 1900. It shows 'Roslyn' (Roswell) pits. According to our historian Lynne Turner at this time the pits were a series of man-made clay pits, which for centuries provided clay for embanking the river and a rich source of eels and fowl. This information is contained in Lynne Turner's book called In The Shadow of the Cathedral. The photograph is courtesy of Ely Musuem and is available at the museum if readers want to go along and have a look for themselves. We hope this helps to shed some light on the subject.
