Archant

It gives me no pleasure to criticise plans that must have taken some effort to produce, but I very much hope that those of Gary Johns Architects for Ely’s Market Place are not realised.

The proposed building is too tall for the location, dwarfing its neighbours and looking especially bulky for those approaching from Forehill.

Its bland, heavy contemporary style is unattractive in itself and totally out of keeping with the surroundings. Surely in such a sensitive location something in a traditional idiom should be attempted?

If we allow thus lumpish edifice to be put up we shall show ourselves incapable of learning the lesson provided by the one it replaces.
