I READ with complete fascination your front page story entitled "Town's Makeover" and would like to offer three suggestions.
Firstly, instead of building houses on the site of the Church Hall, why not invite a major supermarket to locate there.
Any excess car parking required already exists on the recreation ground. This would bring people from the surrounding satellite villages into Soham instead of Newmarket or Ely to shop.
After all, they already come here for education and medical facilities. Once the high street is full of happy" shoppers, they may be encouraged to use the existing shops.
Also, it would eradicate the need for Soham people to shop out of town so regularly, therefore increasing the high street footfall further
Basically, we already have a pet supermarket on the edge of town which attracts people from all over the region, and if it good enough for pets, why not humans?
Secondly, invite a cinema chain to build a complex somewhere in town, once again to attract people in and satisfy the local community
Thirdly, have organised bare-knuckle fighting in the Walter Gidney Pavilion on Friday and Saturday nights to divert the disorganised bare-knuckle fighting from the streets.
The prizes could range from a glass of sherry, to a game of scrabble, everyone's a winner.
Not forgetting the ladies, they could have weekend mud wrestling.
Alternatively, instead of these physical activities, the youth of Soham could enjoy a film at the new cinema complex.
PS: Soham Town Rangers needs our support. This is our most successful season to date and gates are somewhat disappointing.
Please get yourselves up to Julius Martin's Lane.
