SOME of us may be wondering if Sluice is a work of art, let alone culture, but if the council thinks we need more of it, perhaps they should first pay attention to enhancing the greatest piece of culture we already have. On the north side of Ely Cathedral is Steeple Row; a jumble of rubbish bins, wobbly lamp posts, iron fire escapes. Isn't this the sort of thing usually associated with undesirable and run-down areas? If we can afford Sluice with its light and noises (who will pay when it goes wrong?) surely we can afford to clean up around the culture that created Ely 1,000 years ago.
