EVERY plan that emerges from our leaders offers public consultation. All of them ask which option we would choose, but the answer from many of us, is none of them
Who is it that seeks to continue this effort to have perpetual growth? Ely is already a great place and any major development can only make it less pleasant for those living here and for future newcomers
Of course, some minor changes are needed, such as redevelopment of those ghastly buildings that house the police and the ambulance service, as are changes to make the Market Square more user friendly on non market days and we need the proposed new sports centre.
We also need to encourage some Cambridge companies to have satellite offshoots in say Lancaster Way thus reducing the A10 commuting traffic.
There is no evidence that the state intends to build a southern bypass, yet our leaders ask us to approve a new superstore which will draw more people from Newmarket and the south, many will need to enter the city under the railway underpass.
All in the name of giving us more choice, we all know that we can buy 20 different butters hundreds of different cheeses 30 different tomatoes in our city, there is more than enough choice for most people.
We need to fight the overbearing central government on this one, almost all future growth of population and commerce in within our city can only lead to more congestion, followed by a need to update the infrastructure, more schools more roads more surgeries and all at enormous cost
Does anyone really think we shall then have a better Ely
