JEREMY Friend-Smith (Liberal Democrat district councillor) implied that the success of the Liberal Democrats in the recent council elections in the Witchford area was attributable to an endorsement of Liberal Democrat support for fortnightly rubbish collections which had been trialed in the village prior to that time.

Is it significant that, at the recent election, all the councillors elected from Bottisham and Witchford were Liberal Democrats? Who listened to whom?

I find this suggestion rather surprising in view of the fact that neither the Conservatives nor the Liberal Democrats made any mention of their views on fortnightly rubbish collections in the run-up to the recent elections.

I looked in vain for some guidance from both parties on this issue in their pre-election literature as it would certainly have influenced where I cast my vote.

Had it been clear at the time that the Liberal Democrats actually supported the unpopular and ill-thought-out system of fortnightly collections which required residents to store vast quantities of waste on their land or take it to the tip themselves, I would hazard a guess that the results of the recent elections might have been very different.

I, for one, am extremely grateful to the district council for returning Witchford to weekly collections.
